PARA KAY B
7:18 AM
I never intended to buy this book
and just happened that there was a greatest writers tour called ‘Lakbay
Panulat’ in our uni and some of the writer’s books were on sale on that
particular day. To prove to myself that I can be a diverse reader I told myself
that I’ll buy ‘Para Kay B’ because it looks interesting and why not. I’ve never
really been into Tagalog novels because it’s harder for me to understand as
literature.
So I went through the struggle of
taking my newly bought book to get it signed by the author which is Ricky Lee.
I wasn’t fully aware that he was this big time script writer so I wasn’t
starstrucked. I got my book signed and it contained a personal message too.
Weeks passed and I haven’t even
started reading it. It just lay on my rainbow shelf waiting to be read. I
finished reading ‘Summer in the City’ by Candace Bushnell before I got into
Para Kay B.
It was dragging the first few pages
so I stopped reading it for a while. Weeks have passed yet again and I’m still
not even passed page 30. I thought of selling it since it has Ricky Lee’s
signature in it I bet it will cost higher but I just can’t do it. I needed to
read the whole thing before I decide to sell it. So I did. I got through the
first story and I couldn’t get enough of it. The next thing I know I’m on page
150. IT WAS SO GOOD.
I judge stories by my initial reaction
to it may it be crying or putting a book down to really think about the
fictional situation and what I would’ve done if that happened to me. I didn’t
cry but I did put the book down several times.
I love how there are so many plot
twists and it just gets you thinking and going back to previous pages to piece
it all together. I love how it was all different types of love. There was gay
and incest in the stories.
In Lucas’ theory of only 1 out of 5
people gets to have their happy ending it really got me thinking if you have a
squad of 5 people only 1 of you will get to be truly happy love life wise. It
sounds sad but I like to believe that it’s life. We all don’t get to have our
dream endings sometimes we just go for contentment but there’s also this other
side that your happy ending still depends on you.
Whether you’re happy with your work,
family, friends, pets, community, fans or whatever your story doesn’t have to
end with a partner skipping on a field of flowers. Just like the end of Para
Kay B, Lucas doesn’t end up with Bessie (sorry if I spoilt ‘ya) but he was
happy with being a writer and sometimes life is better without that fantasy
ending.
My favourite line from the book is
Reading that just felt so freeing.
Like there were no regrets it just felt as if you’re heavy heart was lighter.
You can now breathe without baggage.
