The Lovechild of Arts and Filipino Culture: 10 Highlights from Parkfest

3:00 PM

How would I describe Parkfest? I say it’s like a weekend of a modernized Linggo ng Wika. Basically it’s a festival celebrating Filipino culture instead of dancing Carinosa and singing Ako’y Isang Pinoy there was ‘The Amazing Parkfest Race’. Whoever thought of this race was pure genius! It was the best way to observe the art across the park plus it’s an opportunity to bond with other park goers.

I found out about Parkfest through Abbey Sy’s Instagram post. She was one of the artists and may I say her work was my favourite out of all of them. So I dragged my brother to go to Nayong Pilipino with me to experience Parkfest and man did he have the time of his life.

Upon entering we were given a set of questions to answer while exploring the park, completing the questions will give you a chance to win a lootbag during the raffle draw the next day. This was ‘The Amazing Parkfest Race’ it was like the Amazing Race but it wasn’t actually a race.

I won’t get into much detail on what we did on each question but I would give out some highlights during the event.

1.    Pick a dare. I picked to sing the Langit at Lupa song in which I feel like na-impress ko si ate volunteer when I sang the whole song. Gabriel picked to play bato bato pik against me and lost so he had to play sipa and hit it 3 times in which he effortlessly did.

2.    There was something called the Chalk Walk with Richelle Macapagal, there was chalk doodles all over the pavement which took me back to the times where I wrote my name in the streets.

3.    I saw Ella Lama finishing her artwork with her partner. We were supposed to put colored plastic bottle caps to our choice of freedom. I picked ‘Kalayaan sa Pamamahayag’ as a journalist it is important to have this freedom.

4.    There was this huge board where you can paint your name in. Whoever gets to find my name...is such a creeper damn you should work for the government.

5.    There was this artwork where you should count how many kinds of street food were drawn in it.

6.    There was this station where we were given ribbons to tie on a string and on that ribbon we were supposed to write what was our wish for the future of the Philippines. I wrote “Huwag mag beastmode si DU30” mahirap na medj chill muna siya

7.    There was this jeepney where there were places written on it with such precise calligraphy. The place I wanted to go next is Siquijor.

8.    And of course, the Abbey Sy kalesa with colourful Filipino traits written on it. There was so much detail on it, truly Abbey Sy has proven herself worthy of the title ‘calligraphy queen’ on my book. Her writing identifies her, just one look at it and you’ll be like yep si Abbey Sy yan.

9.    I bought bracelets and they were so quirky with different words like malabo, malinaw, purpose and so much more. I was searching for tadhana pero sold out na. 3 for 100 not bad cute naman eh.

10. Prince Dundee. You might know him as the guy who sings at BGC late at night. Well when I knew he was one of the performers I didn’t hesitate to come. His song choices ARE THE BEST, his voice is so deep it will take you places. He could be heard on his soundcloud.

Overall I had a grand time and as I’ve said before it was the best way showcase the artworks and Filipino culture. Art + Filipino culture + fun = PARKFEST
