The Ugly Side of Fashion: The True Cost: A Documentary
7:18 AM
H&M,
Forever 21, Joe Fresh, Gap, Zara, Topshop these are just few of the brands that
contributes to fast fashion and factory slavery.
What
is fast fashion? Have you ever notice that whenever you pass by Forever 21
there’s a new batch of clothes on the racks? That’s fast fashion, honey.
I
must admit that before I watched this documentary I shop at these stores well
mainly Forever 21 as if naman afford ko
yung Zara. But I also adored clothes from H&M and Topshop, that most
probably if I had the money I would’ve been buying from them as well.
But after
watching The True Cost it changed my perspective on these fashion brands.
The
True Cost exposed how these brands contributed on slavery mainly from
Bangladesh and Cambodia, how garment factories are number 2 on the greatest
amount of toxic waste produced second to oil factories.
On
the documentary you would see how much hard work, sacrifices, blood and health
are being put into the clothes we wear. These fashionable clothes we wear we
just got for less than a thousand pesos but these factory workers are working
their ass off, getting killed and being separated from their families for what?
Less than a dollar a day? We don’t know what these clothes went through to get
to our closets and I think it’s time we know.
Who
to blame but the fashion industry right? Allowing these people to work in such
inhumane conditions. But also maybe ourselves. It’s time to tone down the
materialism, the thinking of “more more and more” We see these clothes as a
status symbol, by getting to wear these clothes has this meaning that we are
important, we are yayamanin because
we could afford them but who is the real mayaman?
Diba yung mga business people who own
the company brand?
Maybe
it’s time to look for clothes that are worth it. A thrift shop or non-branded
stores are great options. Just remember that if you buy clothes be practical it
would not just be better for you, it’ll be better for others too.
Let
me know if you get to watch The True Cost (you can torrent it). I hope this
changes how you look at fashion because it definitely changed mine J
