Sarimanok

Proud friend right here! As part of the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, Ferrena was involved in this dance concert in UST entitled, Sarimanok. It was about the Marawi siege and the Mindanao culture.

It has been a solid year since my high school friends and I got together. For Ferrena to invite us was really sweet. This was an important night for her and we would want to support her. Honestly, getting in was the hard part. UST security is hella tight. Our concert tickets were available outside the auditorium which means we didn’t have any proof to present to the guard to let us in. It took a lot of self-pity and pathetic begging to let us in.

The concert was rich in Mindanao culture. It’s wonderful to think that the Philippines have that kind of side. It was like a fantasy or folklore during the first few minutes into the concert.

Then as reality strikes, the Marawi siege began. It was clear they involved ISIS in the play. They had a storyline too about the sultan’s family. The daughter being taken and was somewhat brainwashed to be part of the resistance.

The dancing was great and fluid. It was filled with emotion as it portrayed every scene in the sequence. Got to commend the props too! Well thought out.

I love the songwriting as well. It was just the sultan who was singing and somewhat narrating what was happening and it was overall moving. I nearly cried.

This whole dance concert was an excellent way to give an artistic insight on what was it like during the siege. It was grave and heartbreaking what happened to Marawi and it was shown in Sarimanok, but it was also accompanied with a beautiful sash of culture.

Much love,
